Is Zepbound now available in Canada?
As of May 2025, Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Zebound has received authorization from Health Canada for offering Zepbound in Canada. Zepbound has also previously been approved by the FDA for sale in the US.
Zepbound was made available by Eli Lilly for distribution in Canada through pharmaceutical distributors as of July 9, 2025. Your medical practitioner may be able to switch you to Zepbound, if appropriate, as an effective treatment option that can also help lower your medication cost.
What is Zepbound?
Zepbound (tirzepatide) is a GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist that has been approved by Health Canada for the treatment of Type-2 diabetes, and is also prescribed for weight loss in a program that includes diet and exercise.
Similar to Mounjaro, which also contains the same active ingredient, Zepbound is expected to be made available in Canada as pre-filled single-dose injectors, or as a single dose vial.

How does Zepbound work?
Zepbound contains tirzepatide, the first and only once-a-week active ingredient, which activates two receptors: GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). This increases insulin production while decreasing glucagon levels, which, in turn, decreases blood glucose levels in the body. It also reduces food intake, and slows down the speed at which your stomach digests food.

Zepbound may be covered by some insurance plans and employers for individuals with certain conditions. Provincial programs will vary in coverage as well. In addition, some insurance plans may require that you try other treatments before taking Zepbound for underlying conditions.
Zepbound cost varies based on dose, with higher doses costing more.
Generally, it will cost between $400 to $900 in Canada, if paying out of pocket without insurance coverage and if not eligible for any patient support or discount programs.
There are several ways to reduce your out-of-pocket cost for Zepbound in Canada:
Use the Myzepbound™ Patient Support Program: Eli Lilly Canada offers co-pay assistance and savings cards to eligible patients. If you have private insurance, the program may reduce your co-pay to as little as $1–$3 per day. If you're paying cash, the savings card can offer significant discounts—just be sure to apply it at the time of purchase, as it can’t be used retroactively.
Ask your provider about enrollment: Many clinics will provide information to help you register for MyZepBound during your appointment or prescription process.
Check your private insurance: Some extended health plans may now cover Zepbound for obesity. Contact your provider to ask if tirzepatide for weight loss is included, and whether a prior authorization is needed.
Explore telehealth options: Virtual care providers may offer ZepBound access bundled with insurance navigation or enrollment support.

Many insurance companies and employers may choose to provide coverage for Zepbound. Before agreeing to cover the cost, they may ask for a confirmation or explanation from your clinician, indicating its medical necessity, sometimes referred to as a pre-authorization. This approval process can take several days or weeks. For specifics regarding coverage, it's always best to contact your insurance provider directly and inquire about Zepbound.
Cloudcure can not only help you navigate insurance coverage, but also help direct bills to your drug insurance plan.

Zepbound is indicated for Obesity and is authorized by Health Canada for this claim.
Zepbound is designed for self-administration using a pen injector or needle. It is generally administered once a week into the subcutaneous fatty tissue under the skin. The injection process is relatively straightforward with minimal discomfort, and most individuals can do it themselves.
Currently, Zepbound is offered solely as an injectable medication. If needles aren't your preference, you can ask your healthcare provider about other options like Rybelsus, an oral medication containing Semaglutide. It's best to discuss these choices with your healthcare professional.
Individual patients' experiences with Zepbound may vary. Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, and/or abdominal pain. Many common side effects improve in the first few weeks as you get used to the medication. If symptoms persist or get worse, you should seek immediate medical care.
You should speak to your medical practitioner about side effects before you start treatment.
Zepbound may be a safe, long-term treatment for some patients under the supervision of a clinician. Your clinician will also guide you on dosage adjustments, monitoring and whether it is safe for you to gradually reduce the dosage.
We do not recommend that you consider compounded Zepbound or Tirzepatide products as they have not been evaluated by Health Canada for safety or tested for effectiveness. There is currently no shortage of tirzepatide and it does not meet other criteria to be compounded regularly (such as unique formulation).
Most individuals do not require a compounded version of tirzepatide with added ingredients or agents.
Please speak to your healthcare provider for further information.
