Your waist-to-height ratio is one of the simplest health screens you can do at home, and one of the most useful — it often adds information that BMI alone misses. Just as importantly, it explains what the number can and cannot tell you, so you can read it the way clinicians do: as a quick signal, not a diagnosis.
Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is your waist circumference divided by your height in the same units. For most adults a ratio under 0.5 is considered the healthy screening range — a simple version of the rule is to keep your waist to less than half your height. Because it focuses on central, abdominal fat, WHtR often complements BMI, which only captures overall size. A ratio of 0.5 or above is a prompt to look more closely, not a diagnosis. Measurement technique matters, and the boundary is a general guideline, so an individual result is best interpreted by a clinician alongside your full health picture.
How waist-to-height ratio is calculated
The formula could not be simpler. Your waist-to-height ratio is your waist measurement divided by your height, using the same units for both:
WHtR = waist ÷ height
So someone with an 80 cm waist and a height of 170 cm has a ratio of 80 ÷ 170, which is about 0.47 — comfortably inside the healthy screening range. Because both numbers are in the same units, the ratio works the same whether you measure in centimetres or inches; the calculator above handles the unit conversion for you and rounds to two decimal places.
The genius of dividing by height is that it adjusts waist size for how tall you are. A 90 cm waist means something different on someone who is 150 cm tall than on someone who is 195 cm tall, and the ratio captures that automatically — which is part of why it is such a quick, fair screen across different body sizes.
How to interpret your ratio
Most adult guidance uses 0.5 as the key screening boundary, and so does this tool:

These bands are screening cut-offs, not diagnoses. A ratio under 0.5 suggests central fat is within a typical range; a ratio at or above 0.5 is a prompt to take a closer look. Crucially, a result above the boundary does not on its own confirm a problem, and a result below it does not guarantee good metabolic health. The number opens a better question: what does the rest of the picture show?
Why central fat matters
The reason waist measurement earns its place alongside weight is that where you carry fat matters, not just how much. Fat stored around the abdomen — including the deeper visceral fat that wraps around internal organs — is metabolically more active than fat on the hips and thighs, and is associated with different health considerations. Two people at the same weight can have very different wadistlines, and very different central-fat profiles.

Why WHtR is a screen, not a diagnosis
For all its usefulness, the ratio has clear limits, and reading it honestly means knowing them. A few things it cannot see:
- Fitness and muscle. The ratio reflects waist size relative to height; it cannot tell a strong, fit midsection from one carrying excess fat, and posture or core tone can nudge the tape.
- Measurement technique. Where and how you place the tape, and whether you measure consistently, all affect the number. Small differences in method can shift a result across a boundary.
- Individual and population differences. The 0.5 cut-off is a general adult guideline. Build, ethnicity, pregnancy, and certain conditions can all change how meaningful a given ratio is.
- The fuller picture. A single ratio says nothing about blood pressure, blood work, sleep, history, or how you feel — the things a clinician weighs together.

What to do with your result
If your ratio sits comfortably under 0.5 and you feel well, there may be nothing to do beyond carrying on with the habits that keep you there. If it is at or above the boundary, or simply raises questions, the most useful next step is not to fixate on the figure but to look at the fuller picture with someone qualified to interpret it.
