It uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, the formula Canadian dietitians rely on, for your maintenance calories, then turns your goal weight and timeline into a daily calorie target, a daily deficit, and an honest readout of how aggressive that weekly rate actually is. A weight loss calculator estimates the daily calorie target and deficit needed to reach a goal weight in a chosen timeline. This one uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation for maintenance calories (TDEE), then applies a 7,700 kcal-per-kilogram planning constant to convert the gap into a daily deficit and weekly rate. A sustainable pace is roughly 0.5 to 1 percent of body weight per week; faster than that is harder to maintain, gives back more muscle, and is generally best done with clinical supervision. Every figure is a population-based estimate, not a personal prescription — treat it as a starting point to refine with a clinician or dietitian, especially if you have PCOS, hypothyroidism, perimenopause, or a history of weight cycling.
What a weight loss calculator actually computes — and what it doesn't
A weight loss calculator is a planning tool. It takes a small handful of inputs and runs two pieces of well-validated arithmetic: an estimate of how many calories you burn in a day (your Total Daily Energy Expenditure, or TDEE), and an estimate of how big a daily calorie shortfall it would take to reach a specific weight by a specific date. That's it. It is not a diagnostic, not a medical assessment, and not a substitute for a conversation with a clinician.
What it cannot do is just as important. It cannot measure your actual metabolic rate, only estimate it from population averages. It cannot account for muscle mass, body composition, or how your specific body partitions fuel between fat and lean tissue. It cannot see thyroid function, sex hormones, insulin sensitivity, perimenopausal changes, or any of the medications that genuinely change how someone responds to a deficit. So the right way to use the number is the way clinicians and dietitians do: as a sensible starting point to test against reality, not a target to obey.
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation, explained
Two formulas dominate calorie estimation: Harris-Benedict (developed in 1919, revised in 1984) and Mifflin-St Jeor (developed in 1990). Repeated validation studies have found Mifflin-St Jeor more accurate for the modern adult population, which is why Dietitians of Canada and most clinical sources now prefer it. The formula itself is:
BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) + s
where s is +5 for males and −161 for females. The result is your Basal Metabolic Rate — the energy your body burns at complete rest just to keep you alive, breathing, and warm.
A worked example: a 35-year-old woman who is 165 cm tall and weighs 75 kg has a BMR of (10 × 75) + (6.25 × 165) − (5 × 35) − 161, which works out to roughly 1,445 kcal/day at rest. At a lightly active level (activity factor 1.375), her estimated TDEE is about 1,445 × 1.375 ≈ 1,987 kcal/day; at moderately active (factor 1.55) it climbs to roughly 2,240 kcal/day. That's the number the calculator above will show her, and in the simplest model it is the dividing line between gaining and losing weight.
The 3,500-calorie myth (and why deficit math is messier)
You'll often see weight-loss advice anchored to "3,500 calories equals one pound." The number comes from the average energy content of body-fat tissue: about 7,700 kcal per kilogram, or roughly 3,500 kcal per pound. It works fine as a rough planning constant, and this calculator uses it to convert the gap between your current and goal weight into a daily deficit.
But the rule is not a physical law. Real bodies are not flat batteries. As you lose weight, your maintenance calories drop slightly (you have less mass to carry around), and the body increases the efficiency of how it uses fuel, a normal effect sometimes called metabolic adaptation. So the same daily deficit produces progressively less weight loss over time. Water balance, glycogen storage, the menstrual cycle, sleep debt, and a single salty meal can all swing the scale by a kilogram or more from one day to the next, completely independent of body fat. The takeaway: a calorie deficit reliably produces weight loss over a long enough window, but the relationship is noisier and slower than the arithmetic suggests. Plan with the math; trust the trend, not any single weigh-in.
How activity level affects TDEE
The calculator multiplies your BMR by one of five activity factors, ranging from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (extra active). These are broad categories with a lot of variation hidden inside them, and most people get them wrong in the same direction: they over-estimate.
A useful sanity check: "sedentary" means a desk job and no real exercise; "lightly active" means light exercise one to three days a week or a job that involves real walking; "moderately active" means deliberate, harder exercise three to five days a week; "very active" means daily training; and "extra active" is reserved for physical jobs (construction, farming, tree-planting) or twice-daily training. If you spend most of your day at a screen and do two or three gym sessions a week, you're closer to "lightly active" than "moderately active" — and starting with the lower estimate is safer than starting with the higher one.
Why timeline matters more than total deficit
The single most important choice in this calculator is the timeline you pair with your goal weight. A 10 kg goal hit over 10 weeks demands a roughly 1,100 kcal/day deficit, which for most adults means a target intake low enough to risk muscle loss, fatigue, and rebound. The same 10 kg goal spread over 25 weeks demands about 440 kcal/day, a far more livable number that still gets you there, with more of your lean mass intact.
This is why the calculator deliberately flags aggressive timelines. The Canadian Obesity Guidelines and other major bodies land on the same range: roughly 0.5 to 1 percent of body weight per week is sustainable for most adults; above 1 percent is harder to maintain and more likely to be followed by regain; above 1.5 percent is rarely appropriate outside medically supervised programs. When to see a clinician
Calculators are a planning aid. Clinician-led care is the recommendation whenever the stakes are higher than a few pounds of vanity weight. Strong signals that it's worth booking a consultation include a BMI of 30 or higher, related conditions like type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, sleep apnea, hypertension, or PCOS, a personal history of disordered eating or repeated weight cycling, prior attempts at calorie targets like this one that didn't produce lasting results, or any meaningful concern about how a deficit will interact with your medications or other health conditions.

Limitations to be honest about
The calculator above is genuinely useful, but a few important caveats sit underneath the numbers:
