Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) — Product Information
Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist approved by Health Canada. It is manufactured by Eli Lilly Canada Inc.
Health Canada–Authorized Indication
In Canada, Mounjaro is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus:
- As monotherapy when metformin is considered inappropriate due to intolerance or contraindications
- In combination with other medicinal products for the treatment of type 2 diabetes
Important: Mounjaro is not indicated in Canada for chronic weight management. The product authorized for chronic weight management is Zepbound® (also tirzepatide), under a separate Health Canada approval.
How Mounjaro Works
Tirzepatide activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. This dual-receptor mechanism enhances insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, suppresses glucagon secretion, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite — all of which contribute to improved glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Clinical Results — SURPASS Trial Program
In the SURPASS phase 3 trial program (across 5 trials, n=>13,000 adults with type 2 diabetes):
- Mounjaro 15 mg reduced HbA1c by an average of 2.0–2.4% across the program
- Significant reductions in fasting glucose and body weight were observed across all doses
