Is Ozempic covered in Alberta?

There’s no province-wide drug plan here the way British Columbia or Quebec runs theirs, so coverage depends entirely on what you’re enrolled in. Most working Albertans get access through an employer benefits plan, and a lot of those plans do cover Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro with a prior authorization form your prescriber fills out. If you don’t have employer coverage, Alberta Blue Cross Non-Group Coverage is open to any resident who applies — it runs about $63.50/month for a single applicant, covers roughly 70% of eligible drug costs, and Ozempic sits on the approved list under Special Authorization criteria tied to type 2 diabetes management (typically after metformin has been tried). It is not approved through that pathway for weight management. Albertans 65 and older fall under Coverage for Seniors, which pays 70% up to a $25 cap per prescription. None of this is a guarantee — every plan has its own rules, and the honest answer is “it depends on your specific plan,” which is exactly what Cloudcure’s team sorts out with you before you commit to anything.

What does Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro actually cost in Calgary right now?

Retail pricing without insurance in Alberta runs roughly $300–$400/month for Ozempic, $400–$540/month for Wegovy, and $300–$700/month for Mounjaro depending on dose and pen format. That’s a wide range, and pharmacy-to-pharmacy pricing in Calgary itself varies more than people expect. One thing worth knowing: Health Canada approved generic semaglutide versions from Dr. Reddy’s and Apotex in May 2026, and where pharmacies have them in stock, they’re landing below brand pricing — ask your pharmacist for current numbers. Availability is still uneven market to market, so ask before assuming your pharmacy has the generic on the shelf.

How do you actually get one of these prescribed in Calgary without driving to a clinic?

You book a video visit, a Cloudcure clinician reviews your history and goes over what’s realistic given your coverage situation, and if a prescription makes sense it gets sent to a pharmacy that ships to your door — Beltline, the NW quadrant, SE Calgary, wherever you are in the city, plus Cloudcure covers the rest of Alberta the same way: Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie. Delivery is free and discreet. If your employer plan or Alberta Blue Cross requires a Special Authorization form or prior auth paperwork, that’s handled as part of the visit rather than being something you have to chase down separately afterward.

Coverage scenarios in Alberta

Situation Typical path What to expect
Employer benefits plan Prior authorization submitted by prescriber Coverage varies by plan; often partial to full once approved
No employer plan Alberta Blue Cross Non-Group Coverage (self-enroll) ~$63.50/mo premium, ~70% of eligible cost, Special Authorization required
65+ resident Coverage for Seniors 70% of cost up to a $25 cap per prescription
No coverage / uninsured Retail price, generic where available $300–$700/mo depending on drug and dose; generics often less — confirm with your pharmacy

Searching for a virtual doctor in Alberta generally?

A lot of people land here typing “online doctor alberta” or “virtual doctor alberta” without a specific medication in mind yet. Cloudcure isn’t a walk-in-everything telehealth service — it’s built specifically around metabolic health and weight management care, and medication delivery is part of the visit rather than a separate errand afterward. If general virtual primary care is what you need, that’s outside Cloudcure’s lane. If the question is about prescription access and figuring out what your Alberta coverage actually allows, that’s the exact gap this clinic is built to close.
