Is Mounjaro available in Canada?

As of November 2023, Mounjaro is now available in Canada.

Update: As of December 2023, the manufacturer for Mounjaro, Eli Lilly reports that there is a shortage of all doses of Mounjaro due to unexpected demand and competitor shortages. The product continues to ship and be available in pharmacies but patients may have to obtain it a pharmacy that is not their usual pharmacy.

Is Mounjaro available in pre-filled pens, or only as vials in Canada?

Health Canada has approved Mounjaro for use as both single-dose pre-filled pens and single-dose vials. Currently, only the vials are available for purchase in Canada, as the manufacturer Eli Lilly works to increase the production of the convenient pre-filled pens. These pens are expected to be available once the supply and manufacturing constraints have been addressed.

What is the difference between the vial and the injector pen?

Whether you choose Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro in a vial or pen format, the medication inside is the same, with Tirzepatide as the active ingredient.

Mounjaro currently ships in the following strengths in the vial format in Canada: 2.5mg, 5.0mg, 7.5mg, 10.0mg, 12.5mg, and 15.0mg.

Is Mounjaro approved in Canada?

Yes, Mounjaro has been approved by Health Canada since 2022.

Do I need an appointment in order to get a Mounjaro prescription?

No, you do not need any physical or in-person appointment to get a Mounjaro prescription at Cloudcure. However, as part of your medical evaluation, your Cloudcure team will require a video call with you after your lab work is complete. This will ensure that Mounjaro is safe and effective for you.

Not all individuals meeting this criteria may qualify for our program and other factors may be taken into consideration by the clinician including your medical history.

Can I just get a Mounjaro prescription online, without joining Cloudcure?

Unfortunately, we cannot provide a prescription to individuals not actively enrolled in a Cloudcure program.

Am I eligible to join Cloudcure?

Generally, the following individuals may qualify for the program: Aged 18+, with a BMI of 27 to 30, and one or more metabolic conditions such as: diabetes, pre-diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea or PCOS.  Alternatively, individuals with a BMI over 30 may also be eligible.

Not all individuals meeting this criteria may qualify for our program and other factors may be taken into consideration by the clinician, including your medical history.

What is the Cloudcure approach and how does it work?

Cloudcure programs combine psychology-based curriculum, effective medical treatments and ongoing support.

The process consists of a few simple steps:

  3. Receive your lab requisition for blood work
  4. Complete the testing at any conveniently located lab

Will my drug insurance plan or provincial plan cover the cost of Mounjaro?

Mounjaro may be covered by some insurance plans and employers for individuals with certain conditions. Provincial programs will vary in coverage as well. In addition, some insurance plans may require that you try other treatments before taking Mounjaro for underlying conditions.

How do I get Mounjaro coverage under my insurance plan?

Many insurance companies and employers may choose to provide coverage for Mounjaro. Before agreeing to cover the cost, they may ask for a confirmation or explanation from your doctor indicating its medical necessity, sometimes referred to as a pre-authorization. How do you take Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is designed for self-administration using a pen injector or a vial. It is generally administered once a week into the subcutaneous fatty tissue under the skin. The injection process is relatively straightforward and you can find more instructions here.

What is the active ingredient in Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is a dual class medication belonging to the GLP-1 and GIP class agonists. Its active ingredient is called tirzepatide.

Is Tirzepatide sold under any other brand names in Canada?

No, it is not. In the United States, FDA has approved tirzepatide under the brand name Zepbound, which is approved for obesity treatment. However this product has not been evaluated or approved by Health Canada at this time.

Does Mounjaro come in an oral or pill form?

Currently, Mounjaro is offered solely as an injectable pen. If needles aren't your preference, you can ask your healthcare provider about other options which may be equally effective and safe.

What are Mounjaro’s common side effects?

Individual patients' experiences with Mounjaro may vary. Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, weight-loss, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, and/or abdominal pain. Many common side effects improve in the first few weeks as you get used to the medication. If symptoms persist or get worse, you should seek immediate medical care.

You should speak to your medical practitioner about side effects before you start treatment.

How long do I have to take Mounjaro?

Mounjaro may be a safe, long-term treatment for some patients under the supervision of a clinician. Your clinician will also guide you on dosage adjustments, monitoring and whether it is safe for you to gradually reduce the dosage.

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro is the first and only once-a-week medicine that activates two receptors: GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). This increases insulin production while decreasing glucagon levels, which, in turn, decreases blood glucose levels in the body. It also reduces food intake, and slows down the speed at which your stomach digests food.

How big is the needle used with the Mounjaro vial? Will it hurt?

Mounjaro's vials are designed for minimal discomfort, with a very short diabetic or insulin needle. Most users find the experience quite manageable.

It is difficult to use a vial with a syringe?

Using a vial and syringe for Mounjaro might require a few extra steps compared to the injector pen, but it's a straightforward process. You don't need medical training to do it. With clear instructions from your pharmacist or the product insert, you can confidently and safely administer the medication yourself.
