What are the usual side-effects of Ozempic?

Ozempic has several common side effects including decreased appetite, lower cravings, weight-loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain, constipation and fatigue. There are also more serious side effects like inflammation of your pancreas, changes in vision, low blood sugar, allergic reactions, and more. You can review the Ozempic product monograph for more details. It’s best to speak with your primary care provider or prescriber if any side effects become bothersome or do not go away.

How long can I stay on Ozempic?

You can use Ozempic for an extended period with your healthcare provider's supervision. The duration of your treatment varies based on factors like your prescribed dosage, lifestyle, and your response to the medication. Any changes in your health or other medications may also impact the duration of Ozempic use.

How is Ozempic administered?

Ozempic is usually taken as a once-weekly injection. You can find more instructions about taking Ozempic here.

How many doses are in an Ozempic pen?

Ozempic comes in three multi-use injectable pens. The red label pen contains 2 mg of semaglutide and dispenses 0.25 or 0.5mg per dose, the blue label contains 4 mg of semaglutide and dispenses 1 mg doses, and the yellow label (not yet available in Canada) contains 8 mg of semaglutide, dispensing up to 2 mg/dose. Dosing per pen is dependent on your prescription, which can be discussed with your healthcare practitioner.

It's important to consult your healthcare practitioner to determine the exact dosing suitable for you. Our pharmacy team will be able to provide you a suitable dosage format based on the prescription written for you.

Can I count clicks on my Ozempic pen?

For reasons such as titrating the dosage by smaller amounts to reduce side effects, your prescriber may recommend "counting clicks" on your Ozempic pen to adjust the dosage dispensed by your semaglutide pen. The clicks are counted to deliver a dose in between the marked increments or the single dose indicated for the injector pen. Generally, there are 72 clicks in a pen, and 18 clicks would deliver 25% of the max dose, 36 clicks would deliver 50% of the dose, and 54 clicks would deliver 75% of the dose . These instructions are usually off-label and not recommended by the manufacturer and must be discussed with your healthcare provider. However, this practice has been widely adopted by clinics across Canada.

Are there any Ozempic alternatives? What if I don’t like needles?

There are other alternatives to Ozempic which may be more appropriate if you do not like needles. Speak to your Cloudcure clinical team to learn about alternate options.

Is the Online Visit Covered by My Insurance or Provincial Health Plans?

Access to digital platforms such as mobile apps, online visits facilitated through chat-based systems, consultations with nurse practitioners, and non-essential medical visits are examples of services not covered by most insurance policies or provincial health plans in Canada. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Insurance Coverage: Traditional insurance plans typically do not include some of these medical services. This means that if you're seeking treatment through online consultations, you'll most likely need to pay out-of-pocket.
  • Provincial Health Plans: Similarly, provincial health plans across Canada usually do not cover the costs associated these medical services. These plans are more geared towards in-person or synchronous video consultations with medical doctors.

Therefore, you will need to pay a subscription fee or visit fee when seeing most virtual health providers, and it varies depending on the specific treatment you need as well as the type of support being received. Always check with your insurance provider for the most precise information regarding your coverage.

Am I Covered by My Insurance?

Insurance coverage can be a bit of maze sometimes, but we're here to help you navigate it with comfort:

  • Different Plans offer Varied Coverage:  Insurance plans vary significantly, so it’s essential to check your specific policy details. Some plans may offer full coverage for treatments not covered by provincial plans, while others might cover only a portion or under specific conditions.
  • Streamlined Billing Process: If you  have extended health insurance, we can simplify the claims and billing for you. We can bill your insurance provider directly, meaning you won't need to worry about upfront costs for your medications.
  • Upload Your Benefit Card: For a seamless experience, we recommend uploading your private and/or provincial benefit card during your sign-up. This allows our pharmacy partner to apply any available coverage to your treatment plan before finalizing it.
  • Additional Costs:  Please note that insurance typically doesn't cover the cost of additional expenses like sharps bins, supplements and over-the-counter medication such as Gravol. Be prepared for some separate expenses at times, as they may have to be paidout of pocket.

By understanding your insurance policy and taking these simple steps, you can make the most out of your coverage and focus on your health journey without financial stress.

How Long Does Ozempic Last After You Take It?

Ozempic, a medication commonly prescribed for managing type 2 diabetes, has a duration of action (referred to as "half life") that patients and healthcare providers need to consider. After a single injection, Ozempic can remain effective in your body for up to one week, but it continues to be metabolized beyond that.

  • Understanding Its Half-life:  Ozempic's half-life is approximately seven days. This means that it takes about a week for the concentration of the drug in your bloodstream to reduce by half, and it can take up to 5 weeks for the drug to leave your system.
  • Weekly Dosing Schedule and Frequency: Due to its extended half-life, Ozempic is typically administered once a week. This consistent schedule helps maintain stable blood sugar levels. Generally, it takes 4 to 5 weeks to reach a steady state of semaglutide in your body after stabilizing at a certain dose.
  • Consistency: Sticking to the same day each week for your injection can enhance the medication's effectiveness due to improved adherence to your treatment plan.
  • Onset and Duration of Effects:  You may start to notice some initial and early effects within the first week of use. However, it might take several weeks to observe significant improvements in blood sugar control.
  • Steady-State Achievement: Steady-state levels, where the amount of drug administered is in equilibrium with the amount being eliminated, are generally reached after four to five weeks of consistent dosing.
  • Metabolic Considerations Metabolism: Individual factors such as metabolism, age, kidney function, and adherence to dosing schedule can influence the exact duration of effect.

Here are some other Practical Tips to consider, for improving your results on Ozempic:

  • Appointment Reminders: Setting reminders for your weekly dose can help you maintain a regular schedule.
  • Consult Healthcare Providers: Always discuss any concerns or side effects with your healthcare provider to ensure the medication is working effectively for you.
  • By adhering to the prescribed dosing schedule and monitoring your body's responses, you can make the most of Ozempic's benefits for managing your type 2 diabetes or effective obesity and weight-loss treatment.
